Department Of Para-Clinical studies

The Department of Paraclinical Studies is responsible for 3rd and 4th year pre-clinical Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine students. It offers the following undergraduate courses:

    • VMP 3100 – Veterinary Pathology
    • VMP 3300 – Veterinary Microbiology and Immunology
    • VMP 3400 – Veterinary Parasitology
    • VMP 4111 - Pathology of Infectious and Non-infectious Veterinary Diseases

Distance Courses Offered

  • Diploma in Laboratory Diagnostics and Management (DLDM)

  • MSc in Veterinary Pathology
  • MSc in Veterinary Parasitology
  • MSc in Veterinary Microbiology


Members of staff are involved in several collaborative research projects. These are:

  • Surveillance on Viral Zoonoses in Africa.
  • Development of Serological and Field Laboratory Genetic Tools for the Diagnosis and Surveillance of Filovirus Infections.)
  • Research and Surveillance on taeniid tapeworms such as Taenia spp and Echinococcus spp.
  • Research on Anthrax, Tuberculosis and plaque
  • Research on environmental toxicology(pollution) both in terrestrial and aquatic environments

  • Faecal Culture for nematode identification
  • Brain Crush Smear Examination
  • Grass sample examination for infective nematode larvae
  • Post-mortem examination of carcasses
  • Histopathological examinations

The department is also a WHO regional reference centre for the diagnosis of Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS).
